Before the recent mother leaves the hospital with the newborn baby, some "bring home newborn clothes" should be available to dress the new family member when it is taken home.
These "bring home newborn clothes" should be in the newborn size and depending on the time of the year, when the baby is born, should consist of the following:
- a body with long or short sleeves
- some top clothing, consisting of either a little pullover and a pair of little trousers or a pair of rompers
- a little jacket
- a bonnet, as babies loose a lot of their body temperature via their head
- maybe a pair of socks or a pair of comfortable baby shoes
Some manufacturers offer most of the above mentioned items in a package where all the individual items match perfectly together.
If the baby is born in summer, the clothes should preferably be made of cotton, if it is born in winter, warmer materials should be chosen, e.g. wool or a fleecy material.
It is also recommended to take a blanket to the hospital when picking up the newborn, as it feel protected and cosy when it is wrapped into the blanket.
Colour-wise, the "bring home newborn clothes" can either be very traditional and classical, i.e. white and pink or light blue when the parents already know whether the baby is going to be a boy or a girl. If they want to go for more modern colours, navy blue and green are more often chosen for a boy's outfit, and orangey and bright pink items are more often meant to be for a girl. If the parents do not know yet whether their baby is going to be a boy or a girl, they can choose very neutral colours, e.g. yellow, red or beige.
