Article : The cervix is very important in early pregnancy

If you would like to obtain some information about the topic "cervix early pregnancy", the following paragraphs might contain some useful information for you.

In a normal pregnancy, the cervix remains firmly closed until the woman starts having contractions in order to keep the embryo well protected in the uterus. If bleedings occur during early pregnancy, an ultrasound examination is often carried out in order to verify whether the cervix is long enough.

If an uterus weakness exists, a weakness and an advanced opening of the cervix can happen between the 4th and 6th month of pregnancy which could lead to a miscarriage or a premature birth. Mostly, this weakness is only be diagnosed after the first miscarriage or premature birth.

However, nowadays, even women with an uterus weakness can have a baby, as modern medicine can help them that the cervix remains closed until the end of the pregnancy. If it is known that an uterus weakness exists, the cervix can be stiched up in an operation in the 4th month of pregnancy by means of a cerclage. Thus, the cervix remains artificially closed throughout the whole pregnancy and the danger of a miscarriage or a premature birth are minimised. About one to two weeks before the calculated due date, the stitches have to be removed again. A cerclage cap is another possibility to prevent an advanced opening of the cervix. This invention of modern medicine consists of simply putting the cap on the uterus. This step can be carried out without the use of any anaesthetics. The cap also needs to be removed when the contractions start.
