A woman can get pregnant, if a male sperm cell meets a fertile female egg cell in the tube. This is only possible during a few days in the month. Generally, the female body develops one fertile egg cell during the monthly cycle.
After the ejaculation of the man inside the vagina of the woman, the viable and mobile sperms wander round about 20 cm via the cervix and the uterus into the tubes. On this arduous way, the initial number of approx. 200 - 400 sperms is reduced to approx. 500 - 700.
Until the sperm cell has reached the tube, its head has to go through several biochemical conversion procedures which are necessary for the fertilization.
Only the fastest and most mobile sperms reach their aim: They surround the egg cell and try to enter it. But only one sperm cell is able to enter the approx. 100-times bigger egg cell via the membrane.
The first step of the fertilization is the penetration of the sperm into the egg cell. Then, the egg cell membrane changes and prevents that further sperms might penetrate the egg cell. On the first day after the penetration of the semen into the egg cell, the genotypes of the mother and the father are still separated in the egg cell. Within the next 24 hours, the cell cores of the egg cell and the sperm cell meet and merge. This is the actual fertilization.
As the egg cell only has a very short life expectancy (between 12-24 hours), the fertilization has to take place in the tube. After the ejaculation in the vagina, the first sperm cell can already reach the tube after 15 minutes.
