If a woman wants to get pregnant, she and her partner have to have sexual intercourse during her fertile days, i.e. round about the point of time when the ovulation takes place. If a woman has a very regular cycle of 28 days, the ovulation normally takes place on the 14th day after the beginning of the last period.
There are several ways of determining the point of time when the ovulation happens: Some women feel a lower abdominal and pelvic pain, the so-called midcycle pain around or at the point of time of the ovulation.
Another indicator is the change of consistency of the cervix mucous which is more watery and transparent at the point of time of the ovulation, and thus, provides a more favourable atmosphere for the survival of the sperms in the vagina.
If a woman is not sure, when the ovulation takes place, she can also purchase test strips in the pharmacy which are to be held into the urine and measure the increasing concentration of the LH hormone before the ovulation.
As the male sperms have a maximum life expectancy of 5 days and the egg cell remains fertile for 12-24 hours, the fertile days are normally between the 10th and 16th days after the beginning of the period (assuming that the woman has a regular cycle of 28 days).
But if a woman wants to get pregnant, she and her partner should have sex as often as possible during her fertile days in order to increase the chance for her to get pregnant.
