Vasectomy
A vasectomy is the removal of a part of the vas deferens which is about approx. 2-3 cm long on both sides. Thus, the sperms cannot mix with the seminal fluid during the ejaculation, but are absorbed by the body. Therefore, no pregnancy can be caused. Vasectomy is still one of the most secure methods to achieve a continuing sterility.
When can vasectomy be recommended?
Vasectomy can be recommended if a couple does not want to have any more children or if a pregnancy should be avoid due to medical reasons. As a vasectomy is quite difficult to be reversed, a couple should be absolutely sure that they do not would like to have a child and should take their time when making their decision.
Pregnancy after vasectomy ?
Pregnancy after vasectomy is possible, but requires some effort. The two ends of the vas deferens are sewed under the operation microscope (duration of the operation approx. 1,5 - 3 hours) by means of the thinnest threads. After the operation, the probability that the sperms will be able to pass the vas deferens is about 80%. Due to antibody development against the man's own sperms, the pregnancy rate is not so high (30-50%). Normally, the costs for this operation will not be paid by the social security. The intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is another possibility for pregnancy after vasectomy. Here, male sperms are taken from the testicles and are introduced into the egg cell under the microscope. The success rate of this method is about 30%, the costs and the psychological stress for both partners are high.
