Article : Cramps during pregnancy can occur, read why here.

Women who are suffering from pregnancy cramps might find some useful information in the following paragraphs in order to avoid the disagreeable pain which mostly appears in the calves, the heels and sometimes in the uterus of pregnant women.

In general, pregnancy cramps result from a deficiency of certain minerals. If women are pregnant, they often have a lack of magnesium, calcium and vitamin D which the unborn child takes from their metabolism when it is growing.

What can pregnant women do against pregnancy cramps?

If the woman already experiences severe pregnancy cramps at the beginning of her pregnancy, she should ask her gynaecologist for a prescription of magnesium and calcium tablets. Alternatively, a lack of magnesium and calcium can also be compensated with a nutrition which is rich in these two minerals, e.g. bananas, green vegetables, spinach, nuts and dairy products. It is also recommended to drink mineral water which contains a high amount of magnesium.

What can pregnant women do when suffering from pregnancy cramps?

When suffering from a cramp in the heel or the calf, you should press your heel against the foot of your bed. If your bed does not have a foot, get up and stand on the leg in which you experience the cramp.

The following is also helpful when suffering from cramps during pregnancy: Women should take alternating cold and hot showers. Massages which could be given from the partner and moderate physical exercise, i.e. walking around can also be recommended. Furthermore, the woman should also try to put her legs up, i.e. putting a cushion under her legs, when she is lying in bed or sitting in a chair in order to avoid cramps.
