Today's home pregnancy tests are already very reliable and can supply very precise results only a couple of days after the conception.
Home pregnancy tests are supposed to detect beta human chorionic gonadotrophin, a hormone which is responsible for the production of oestrogens and gestagens in the ovary during pregnancy. Today's home pregnancy tests are already so sensitive that the existence of beta human chorionic gonadotrophin can already be proven 6-8 days after the fertilization of the egg cell, i.e. 2 days after its embedding into the uterus. But in order to be more certain and to get a more reliable test result, women should make a pregnancy test on the second day after the non-appearance of the expected period.
Although home pregnancy tests are very reliable today, it can happen that although a woman is pregnant, she obtains a negative test result. This can be due to the fact that the test has been made too early and therefore, the beta HCG level has not been high enough to detect the hormone. Sometimes, expired pregnancy tests also provide wrong results.
If a woman still is in doubt whether she is pregnant or not after having received a negative test result, she should wait a couple of days and make a new test making sure that the test's best-before date has not already expired.
It also happens that a positive test result is obtained, although the woman is not pregnant (anymore). In this case, the egg cell has probably been fertilized, but the progeny has not developed appropriately and has been pushed off. Sometimes, the pregnancy is not even realised, as the bleedings are similar to those of the period.
