Although pregnancy tests are very reliable today, of course, there is still a possibility that "pregnancy tests false positives".
In general, it is recommended for a woman to make a pregnancy test if she notices one of the following symptoms:
The non-appearance of the period which is the most common and most obvious indicator for a pregnancy.
Nausea which can take various forms - from slight sickness in the morning to throwing up various times a day.
Sore and growing breasts. A lot of women notice changes of their breasts already in very early pregnancy.
Tiredness, enormous appetite and mood swings might also be further indicators for a pregnancy.
Pregnancy tests detect the existence of beta HGC (beta human chorionic gonadotrophin) either in the blood or the urine. This hormone is responsible for the continuing production of oestrogens and gestagens in the ovary.
Beta human chorionic gonadotrophin can already be detected six to eight days after the fertilization of the egg cell, i.e. only 2 days after the embedding of the egg cell into the uterus. Normally, a positive test result which is supposed to be very reliable can be obtained on the second day of the non-appearance of the period.
It can happen that the woman is not pregnant (anymore) although the test has had a positive result. This is due to the fact that an egg cell is often fertilized and embedded, but that the progeny does not develop appropriately. In most cases, the woman does not even realise the pregnancy, sometimes the period is a bit delayed.
This can be very depressing for women who like to have a child. Therefore, in these cases, pregnancy tests should only be made after the non-appearance of the period (or even later).
