Article : Are expired pregnancy tests accurate?

Women who think they might be pregnant and make a pregnancy test, sometimes do have some doubts whether the results might be incorrect due to expired pregnancy tests.

Therefore, if you would like to get some information on the topic "expired pregnancy tests", read the following paragraphs.

Home pregnancy tests are supposed to detect beta human chorionic gonadotrophin (beta HCG) in the urine, a hormone which is responsible for the continuing production of oestrogens and gestagens in the ovary. Home pregnancy tests are supposed to have a 90 - 98 per cent reliability (depending on the advance of the early pregnancy) but they can also give false negative results due to the following reasons:

- false handling, when not following the package instructions correctly
- test being made too earlier, i.e. the concentration of beta human chorionic gonadotrophin in the urine is not high enough
- when the woman is taking a certain type of medication (hormones etc.)

But a reason for a false pregnancy test result can also be that the best-before date of the pregnancy test has already expired.

When carefully reading the step-by-step instructions that are included in the pregnancy test package, the women should find some information about what to do if the best-before date of the pregnancy test has already expired.

Basically, it should be indicated that expired pregnancy tests can supply false test results. Therefore, if a woman notices that the best-before date of her pregnancy test, which should be given on the package, has already expired, it is recommended to buy a new test (making sure that the best-before date has not already expired) and repeat the test.
