In order to correctly answer the question "can you be pregnant and still get your period", some background information will be provided in the following paragraphs.

If a woman is pregant and the fertilized egg cell has settled in the uterus, the hormone progesterone is constantly produced and prevents the reduction of the uterus membrane which would cause the monthly bleedings, i.e. the period. Therefore, it is almost impossible for a woman to have a proper menstruation once she is pregnant.

Amenorrhea is the technical term for the non-appearance of the period. If a woman had sexual intercourse round about the middle of her monthly cycle and normally has a very regular cylce, the non-appearance of her period can be one of the first indicators of a pregnancy. Of course, there are also various others reasons why the period does not come or can be delayed, e.g. the time difference during intercontinental trips, after severe illnesses, stress, shocks or losses of weight.

As already mentioned, it is very unusual for a pregnant woman to have a proper monthly bleeding, but some pregnant women have a slight bleeding round about four weeks after their last period. Therefore, a slight bleeding on the day when the period would normally be due is not seldom.

Sometimes, if a woman has got a very low progesterone level, bleedings can also occur during the first trimester of a pregnancy.

In general, bleedings during pregnancy should always be discussed with the midwife or the gynaecologist, as they might be an indicator for a miscarriage or a premature birth. And if there is a simple reason for them, e.g. a low progesterone level, the gynaecologist can prescribe some tablets which raise the progesterone level.
