Generally, if a woman with a regular cycle of 28 days is asking herself the question "can you get pregnant if you have sex during your period", this can almost entirely be denied for the following reasons: A woman with a regular cycle of 28 days normally has her ovulation on the 14th day after the beginning of the period. As the male sperms have a life expectancy between 2-3 days (max. 5 days) and the egg cell can only be fertilized within 12-24 hours, her fertile days would be within the 10th to the 16th days after the beginning of the period, which is when the monthly bleedings should be completely over.
However, women with an irregular cycle, i.e. especially young women who have got a very short cycle could have the ovulation shortly after the end of the period. If this is the case, and the couple has unprotected sex during her period, there is a risk that the male sperm cells survive long enough in the vagina to fertilize the egg cell after the ovulation has taken place.
Therefore, if a couple does not want to take the risk of an unwanted pregnancy, they should not have sexual intercourse during the woman's period without using contraceptives or should think about different sexual practices where it is impossible that male sperms can enter the vagina and fertilize the egg cell, e.g. oral sex.
In order to answer the question "can you get pregnant if you have sex during your period": It is not completely impossible to get pregnant during your period, but the risk is low if the woman has got a normal regular cycle.
