What is the "Irritable Bowel Syndrome"?
The Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common illness of the gastrointestinal tract. Disorders of the gastrointestinal activity as well as a higher sensitiveness of the intestines against frequently appearing stimuli as food or stress are characteristic of this illness. The symptoms of the Irritable Bowel Syndrome are as follows: Pains and trouble in the abdominal region, gases and a disordered peristalsis. This disorder of the peristalsis can show in form of constipation and diarrhoea and can alter between these two symptoms.
If the woman normally suffers more from diarrhoea, her symptoms might be less during her pregnancy, as most of the pregnant women digest their food much slower than normally and therefore, diarrhoea appears a lot less.
If women take any type of pills or medicine against the "Irritable Bowel Syndrome", they should consult their doctor or pharmacist when they discover that they are pregnant. The doctor will then advise them whether to continue taking the medicine or perhaps to change to another pharmaceutical product.
If a pregnant woman who suffers from the "Irritable Bowel Syndrome" and is on some type of treatment, wants to breast-feed her baby, she should also consult her doctor and ask whether it is possible to continue with the medicine during the lactation period. As a lot of medicines are directly transmitted to the baby via the mother's milk, it is sometimes not recommended for the mother to breast-feed if she is not able to be without the treatment.
