What can be done to avoid cramping in early pregnancy?

To avoid cramping in early pregnancy, the gynaecologist might already prescribe mineral tablets at the beginning of the pregnancy.

However, if a pregnant woman takes care about a healthy nutrition during her pregnancy, she can avoid a deficiency of magnesium and calcium by eating diary products, nuts, green vegetables, e.g. spinach, and bananas. She should also drink water which is rich in magnesium.

What can be done if you are suffering from cramping in early pregnancy?

If the woman is actually suffering from a cramp in a calf or a heel when lying in bed, she should firmly press her heel against the foot of her bed. If the bed does not have a foot, she should get up and stand just on the leg in which she has the cramp.

Furthermore, she should take alternating hot and cold showers. It is also recommended that she puts her legs up, e.g. by means of a cushion, when she is sitting in a chair or lying in bed. In addition, massages or very moderate physical exercise like walking around is also known to be very helpful when suffering from cramping in early pregnancy.
