Nowadays, home pregnancy tests are so sensitive that normally a reliable test result is already available 6-8 days after the egg cell has been fertilized which is about 2 days after its embedding into the uterus.

But it might be due to the following reasons that a pregnancy test shows a negative result although the woman is pregnant.

It might be that the test was taken too early, i.e. that the level of the beta human chorionic gonadotrophin hormone was not high enough for the hormone to be detected. It is also possible that the best-before date of the pregnancy test has already expired which can also lead to wrong results.

If a woman is in doubt about a possible pregnancy even after she has had a negative pregnancy test result, it is recommended that she should wait a couple of days and repeat the pregnancy test and make sure that the test's best-before date has not already expired. Another possibility is to make an appointment with her gynaecologist in order to verify a possible pregnancy in an early ultrasound.
