Therefore, generally, during the period, there is no egg cell which would be in the condition to get fertilized. If a woman has a very regular cyclus of 28 days, the ovulation will be around the 14th day after the beginning of the period which means that the critical days for a potential pregnancy are between day 10 - 16 after the beginning of the period which is when the menstruation should be entirely finished. Therefore, if the woman has a very regular cyclus, the question "can you get pregnant on your period" can almost entirely be denied.
Although, if a couple has sexual intercourse on the last day of the woman's period and the woman has a very early ovulation, i.e. her cyclus is very irregular, there is a very slight possibility for the woman to get pregnant, as the male sperms can survive in the vagina up to 3-5 days after the ejaculation and then still fertilize an egg cell.

To prevent an unwanted pregnancy, they should either use contraceptives or have sexual practices where no sperms can enter the vagina, e.g. oral sex.
